Can a Lactation Program
benefit my company?

Recently, I received a call from a young woman who worked in a Human Resource Department. She stated,

"I have been given this project, to research a lactation program for our company. We've never received this type of request before and I will be frank with you, I'm not married and never have had any kids. I really don't understand why anyone would want to do this at work."

She was being very honest and her questions and statements were common. A recent U.S. census report stated that 59 percent of women with infants entered the workforce in 1998, almost doubling the numbers of 31 percent in 1976. More and more mothers are starting to voice their needs and companies are having to consider the possibility of handling specific requests.

One such need is a private, quiet, and clean room which is exclusively set aside for new mothers who have returned to work to express milk and bring it home for their infants for the next days feedings.

The American Academy of Pediatrics, obstetricians, pediatricians, family practice physicians, midwives, maternal-child nurses, lactation consultants and other health professionals are encouraging mothers to provide their breastmilk to their infants for the first year of life.

It is considered the main form of nutrition, as a baby's body learns to digest and absorb nutrients from solids. No other form of nutrition is comparable. Formula is not even close to being compared to human milk. It is unique, natural and specific to the health of a mother's infant.

It is for this reason that corporations are coming to understand the significance of this time in a woman's life.

  • She is special and her needs are specific.
  • Companies can decrease an employee's stress by providing her with a space that is intended for this purpose.
  • Continuing her lactation enhances the health of both the mother and baby. On average mothers usually express for 6 to 9 months.
  • Providing an employee a room to express milk enhances her productivity.
  • It reduces her quest in finding a private and clean place to pump.
  • Time is equivalent to money in any company.

Productivity and Efficiency

Another aspect of a lactation program is the need for an efficient method of expressing milk. Again as an employer and once a nursing and working mother, it is important to find excellent pumping equipment to place in a lactation room. A double pump electric breast pump such as the Medela, Lactina or the Hollister Lact-E. These pumps allow mothers to finish pumping in 10 to 15 minutes and perhaps 5 to 10 minutes more for setup and cleanup. A great efficient pumping system, that provides more milk for the mother/employee and increased productivity for a company. Affordable and worth the value in the long run.

Employees are the bread and butter of any company. Each company works hard in retaining employees, enhancing moral and loyalty. A sometimes difficult task depending on the company, but a quiet, private and clean lactation room with an electric breastpump is important to all companies. It sends a message that to the employee that her company cares and is supportive of her choice in providing the best for her infant.
